Abstract
The congenital ossicular malformation with normal external and internal ear is uncommon and it is difficult to make an early diagnosis preoperatively. Furthermore, when it occurs bilaterally, it may cause several problems including hearing loss.
However, heating loss can be usually corrected by appropriate surgical treatment. In this study, we analyzed several cases of isolated congenital ossicular malformations in other to be able to manage this type of disease adequately. We
experienced
10
cases (8 patients) of isolated congenital ossicular malformation which were confirmed by the explo-tympanotomy at Kyungpook National University Hospital and Taegu Fatima Hospital from April 1998 till March 2000. Preoperative and postoperative
audiologic
findings, operative findings and CT results were obtained by chart review and analyzed retrospectively. There were six types of ossicular malformations and among these cases, the stapes footplate fixation type was most common. The improvement of
hearing
impairment by surgery was obtained in 80% of patients. The isolated congenital ossicular malformation has nonprogressive and conductive hearing loss as a main feature. Because there are usually no other problems except ossicular malformation in
these
disease entity, we should make an early diagnosis and perform adequate surgical procedure with all our efforts in order to improve the hearing problem.
